The USA 50/50 Challenge: Top Ten Towns

The USA is famous for many things.

What I like best are the purely American things you can't find anywhere else.

For example: diners, state fairs and small towns.

Here are my top ten small towns, in alphabetical order.

annapolis-1.png

Annapolis, Maryland

Compact and lovely, it’s home to the US Naval Academy and more history than one small town should hold.

beaufort-1.png

Beaufort, North Carolina

Home to the dread pirate Blackbeard and wild island living, sea swimming horses plus it was ‘America's Coolest Small Town.’

cape may-1.png

Cape May, New Jersey

A true landmark village, it was the country’s first seaside resort and has more Victorian buildings than any other town in America.

franklin-1.png

Franklin, Tennessee

The quintessential small town, with a busy main street, sweet cafes and charming shops.

friday harbor-1.png

Friday Harbor, San Juan Islands, Washington

This laidback town takes tourists in its stride and then watches them leave on ferries, knowing they’ll be back.

Georgetown-1.png

Georgetown, South Carolina

True Southern hospitality in its purest form. This is where the wealthy Charlestonites escaped to live a simpler life.

newport-1.png

Newport, Rhode Island

Two completely separate personalities to the one town: trophy winning sailing and the ‘cottages’ of the super wealthy.

portsmouth-1.png

Portsmouth, New Hampshire

A colonial town that never lost its colonial ways. History, maritime tradition and great seafood.

st charles-1.png

St Charles, Missouri

Brick paved streets, colonial taverns, Daniel Boone and the starting point for the Westward Expedition.

Wichita-1.png

Wichita, Kansas

Famous for the classic song, Wichita Lineman, which introduced the name to the rest of the world and for living up to my expectations based on that song.
